Steakstones – Hot Stones Hot Stuff?

Some of you will have experienced the thrill of a chef skillfully chopping and cooking your food in front of your eyes at restaurants such as at Benihana.

With Steakstones, “The Home of Hot Stone Cooking” you unfortunately don’t get the chef, but you do get to cook your own steak.

This way of cooking and presentation is not a new phenomena, though Nick Metcalf, Managing Director of Steakstones, assures me that there is no other product similar on the market that is comparable with the quality of their hot stones. Having appeared on Dragon’s Den and failing to secure a deal on the day, Nick is fiercely proud of the product and how the company has developed over the years.

It certainly is a unique way to cook and eat your dinner, there is an element of theatre when seated around a table of ten with the sizzling stones appearing out of the kitchen one at a time with a prime piece of raw filet perched on top.

To cook with the stones they are reheated to between 300-350 degrees centigrade, pretty hot stuff!

If you’d like to have the Steakstones experience at home however, it does have a bit of price tag attached to it. Should you be thinking of throwing a dinner party to not show off your cookery skills but leave it up to your guests to cook their steak, the stones pictured left are £65 a pop, so it’s a handsome £390 for six before you’ve bought your high end filet steaks, tuna or scallops!

If that’s pushing the wallet too far, there is a smaller stone starter set, other stones and sharing plates available.

But don’t fret if you don’t have that kind of spare change, you can eat on one of Nick’s Steakstones at many restaurants throughout the UK and worldwide for that matter. There is a full list of venues that have Steakstones on their menus here

If you really love them you can join the Steakstones Steakholder Network and hold your own sizzling steak parties, though it does involve a fair amount of investment.

All in all Steakstones are a fun idea. Ideal for event holders, pubs and restaurants and if you really fancy it, for in the home.

I personally prefer to have my steak cooked for me and rested before I eat it, but for some people it would be the ideal scenario in being able to cook their own steak to their liking.

Steakstones host regular #SizzleClub events in Reigate, where you can try them out for yourselves. Dates of these events can be found on their website or email dine@steakstones.com
