Thanksgiving at Appel Ranch

When we were first in the Bay Area after going for dinner with the OH’s colleague Pierre, we were kindly invited to join them for Thanksgiving at Pierre’s other half Patti’s father’s ranch Nr Hollister. There was a small caveat though, to bring some M&S slippers and English chocolate, which was duly carried out.

20131129_104123_Richtone(HDR)We set out from Foster City to drive to Ridgemark Golf and Country Club where we were staying for the night. We were given directions for the drive and had to google map it to try and find Appel Ranch. We found the Golf Club which had terrific views and managed to find the bar before we headed off to the ranch.

Next challenge to find it in the dark! Phew…we found it, it really was out in the sticks

It was lovely to be welcomed into someone’s home for Thanksgiving. The ranch was so warm and welcoming with a log fire roaring and everyone busy in the kitchen. We arrived as the gravy was lovingly being made by at least four members of the family.

We were treated to fabulous turkey, mash, green beans, stuffing and of course the delicious gravy.

Totally relieved that there was no sweet potato which is normally soooo sweet and then topped with marshmallows…no, no and no!

We were also saved from the awkwardness should pumpkin pie have been in offing for dessert. I really don’t like it and was expecting to have to politely eat a helping. Luckily our hosts don’t like it either, saying that everyone has it as tradition but no one particularly has a penchant for it. Instead we were treated to a deliciously rich chocolate torte and a cherry clafoutis…yum.

So a wonderful evening, sharing Thanksgiving in great company.
