A Week in #Bosnia | Day Six – #StreetFood, Meat and Politics in Banja Luka @ExcitingBosnia

A Week in #Bosnia | Day Six – #StreetFood, Meat and Politics in Banja Luka @ExcitingBosnia

Day Six in Bosnia. The week is flying by and nearly at an end, which of course we don’t wish it to.

The morning in Carcacani was a relaxed one after the busy two days of a pit stop tour down to Mostar and back via Sarajevo. A couple more local and cultural things to do before we leave though.

The first was to go into Banja Luka later in the afternoon and to spend the evening sampling Bosnian street food. My host, Holiday in Bosnia, had kindly arranged for me to meet up with Jelena Joksimovic & Mihajlo Popovic of Banja Luka’s health & beauty magazine Ljepota & Zdravlje to interview them about Bosnian street food and Bosnian food in general for a food show for BelgradeLife Radio.

We met at the very popular bar Mr Black, for coffee, pivo and a rather enjoyable & entertaining chat. Apparently, they serve excellent rakija here. More about that in Day Seven’s post! Mihajlo was such fun and we look forward to meeting up with Jelena & Mihajlo when we are back in Banja Luka.

Here’s the show to listen to… Do you know what a cevapi is or a burek, gyros or ustipci? Here’s your chance to find out a little more of what you can find on and off the street in Bosnia.

As we left Mr Black, there was a a lot of commotion with car horns blasting and it appeared that the main road into Banja Luka was closed off for a political cavalcade. We happened to be in Banja Luka for the last day of campaigning for the municipal elections.

We crossed the street to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. It’s a beautiful building, particularly so when lit up at night and we stumbled upon these guys…..It was all happening. The streets were full of people. There were political campaigns, religious performances, fireworks and the young and old milling around.

All this spectating and goings on makes for an appetite, so we head off for our first fix of the evening at Cap Cap for pljeskavica. A delicious meat patty served in Banja Lukan flat bread, lepinja.

Banja Luka is full of shops, bars and eateries, some quirky and a little more unusual, some more to what we’re used to at home. If you see a small bar pop in, you won’t be disappointed. We did this by popping into Mr X for a palate cleansing beer in between eating Turkish kebabs and Greek gyros…there were four of us, so we shared the dishes at each venue!

Fully sated, well two of us were, we starting making our way home. The chaps though couldn’t resist a final snack of pizza!!

It was a brilliant evening.

Little did we know what we had in store for us the next day.
